I've been missing maps like space city, and was hoping for a new map that is geometric, allowing clean cannon jumping patterns. My concept for a new map is one that feels "crystallized". It would be a map completely made of Ice and Snow textures, although the ice would be opaque with the exceptions of the 4 windows up top and a few other areas. It would be large enough for players to "camp from a distance" if they so choose, while remaining close enough that it is balanced. The pictures displayed are without the Giant Box that would surround it (much like on cuberstrike).
This is an overview of the map. It is without textures(because i didnt feel like making them and uploading them to google sketchup). As you can see, the map was created mainly from 3 different sized blocks that I used, all half the height of the next largest box. Now for the item placement:
Green squares: Big Health
Blue Circles: Spring Jumps
Purple Square: Uber Health
Yellow Hexagon: Medium Armor
Red Circles: Small Health
Orange Circles: Medium Health
NOTE: There is no uber armor and that is intended.
The items are placed in the center to promote a heat zone in the middle, rather than sniping behind boxes the entire time. Promoting a heat zone in the middle allows for players to find their own way to attack the middle.
This image displays the spawn placement in the black squares. This location puts them far enough away from any major pickups that the game is balanced in the beginning (not to mention the map is completely symmetrical). To 2 spawn squares to the right of this picture are meant so that spawn trapping is less likely. The cube gives them cover and is close enough to cannon jump to the center near the healths or to go to the corner that provides a spring jump up top. The two zones on the left side of the picture are there for the basic spawn, with no special advantage to them. It does allow for sniping across to the other side of the map, however, if you look back at the overview. I considered flipping the heights of the corner blocks by the pool of water.
This image shows the promising area for sniping. Not only are there gaps to knock your enemies back into, but there are windows to see the enemy as well as a straight opening at the Uber Health where sniping becomes an important part in teamplay. The mini healths on both sides do allow for more close ranged players to approach the snipers and regain some health if damaged a bit on their approach.
This shows the advantage of the pit below. Normally, water would be a bad thing due to slowing movement speed, but there are ledges for stability as well as nice points to snipe at approaching players. There is a hole above this pit so it is in no way impenetrable.
With one last image, this concludes my idea for a balanced, geometric map for now! Please comment and tell me what you think! (might shift around some boxes for more strafing options).
the grayish-blue is the snow(would be dense snow so no dirt or other textures are showing beneath it), the light blue is the opaque ice, and the translucent blue is...well...the translucent ice. The four patches of ice on the ground could have something cool beneath them! Maybe it could be used for a Christmas Easter-Egg. Maybe even add a hole in the ice/snow for water to connect between the 4 places and even the center?
